I love everything about this post. It's wonderful to be a witness to your journey as a writer from the earlier posts to your decision about where to focus. I sense that is exactly right for you because as you've continued your voice has strengthened with the confidence of someone who has found her path.
And yes, the separations and shorter paragraphs are great and they set your writing off perfectly. I came of age as a writer for newspapers where no paragraph was more than five sentences long. I sometimes violate that now but it is still ingrained in me my eye appreciates it too.
Thanks Elizabeth! I appreciate the comment. I used Canva to create the divider. Somehow I won a Canva Pro membership for participation in the Substack Go thing so that’s what I did. But you don’t necessarily need to purchase a pro version. I find that the free version works just fine. You just save your design as an image file (.png or .jpg) and then insert it as an image when you’re working on your post.
And, actually, I have technical question. How did you incorporate a divider that is interesting in and of itself? I've historically limited myself to the single line available on Substack but I'd love to have another option or two.
Hoang, I didn’t so much pay attention to the shorter sentences as to the beauty of your writing and the introspective journey toward coming to terms with the lessons you’ve learned about life and yourself during the pandemic. I like how you intersperse the personal with the universal, the mundane with the profound. I’m sure you’re improving your format, but it’s how you shine through as an individual with a great story to tell that makes the difference.
l love the new format. The pandemic has really increased the tendency for people to feel overwhelmed and long dense paragraphs sometimes exacerbate that feeling.
Hoang, great post and like Sarah, I like the shorter paragraphs and the dividers. I just spent several hours going over everything I learned during Substack Go and shorter paragraphs was one of my key takeaways; also dividers. I'm guilty of paragraphs that are too long. Also, thank you for mentioning Christine Ha and the podcast episode she was on. I downloaded it immediately. Her season of MasterChef was my first season watching that show and I adored her, she was so inspiring.
Right!?!! She was such an inspiration!! Also, I’m glad to hear that you liked the dividers and shorter paragraphs. It was something I learned during Substack Go too!
