Hoang,

You write beautifully about some very poignant topics. I look forward to your pieces. The school cafeteria is often where American children learn difficult or wonderful lessons. My ten year old grandson was telling me that he doesn’t like sitting away from his friends during lunch because that used to be only fun part of the day. Now, due to Covid restrictions they have to sit apart and not talk to one another . 😥

Thanks Deb for your kind words! I agree, the school cafeteria is one of those places where friendships are built but it's also a place where true humanity exists in that you can see the good and the bad in people. Still, I think its useful. I actually met my best friend in high school in the school's cafeteria! We remained friends all throughout my high school years, so it is a bummer that kids aren't allowed to socialize like they used to.

What a great post and the pictures of the snowy scenes are gorgeous. I love learning about other cultures. I enjoy reading middle-grade books, but I haven't read this one yet. It's going on my TBR.

Hi Gayla, thanks for your nice words! The snow photos are just some snaps I took of previous snowstorms in Portland. As for middle grade books I have been so incredibly surprised at the strength of them these days. There are SO many excellent ones, much different than the ones I had when I was young. Not that the selection wasn't good in the old days but nowadays, MG books touch on a lot of big themes like empathy and racism and understanding and connection, which is what this book Save Me a Seat is all about. I also recommend The Bookwanderers by Anna James and The Harlem Charade by Natasha Tarpley. I read them for OBOB and they were amazing!!

Thanks for the other recommendations. I agree that both MG and also YA books have so much to offer young people that we didn't have in the "old days", and my old days are much further back than yours are. lol
